The Cherokees first settled the Flat Rock area thousands of years ago yet by the early 1800's they had been replaced by people of European decent. Wealthy South Carolina planters moved to the Flat Rock area to escape the oppressive heat and frequent disease of their low-country homes. Eventually commerce lead to the establishment of businesses such as Woodfield Inn increasing the vitality of the community. Growth in population and commerce eventually created the need for an organized educational system and therefore Henderson County purchased land at the present intersection of U.S. 25 and Blue Ridge Rd. "in order to establish a school and a two- story stucco building was constructed for grades one to twelve. A one room school house was constructed soon after the aforementioned land's purchase and it was followed by several other structures. During the 1920's several brick structures were constructed, three of which survive today.

Singleton Properties, Inc. renovated the three aforementioned remaining structures and constructed complementary structures on the property in order to continue and add to the vitality that the site has contributed and continues to contribute to the Flat Rock area. Renovation of the old gymnasium is currently in progress and will be a great historic addition to the Singleton Properties.
